Portuguese WPMs

Here is a list, by kennel, of known, registered Portuguese WPMs.
The prominent breeder/exhibitor kennel continues to be de Veiros, which is where I first made my first contacts in 1997. It was originally run by Tavares Passadinhas, then his son Henrique, now adult grandson Nuno shares the honor with both men. Nuno has mused on his blog that his young daughter may someday be taking the leash from him!
This family has been most active in sending dogs to other countries.
Other kennels in Portugal include the next most prominent, do Vale do Poco, owned by Vitor Veiga. More hunting kennels are starting to proceed with registering their dogs in an attempt to allow the gene pool to expand. But as a Dutch breeder once told me, 'you do not need a piece of paper to catch rabbits!' So, even now, almost 30 years since fanciers in other countries began to obviously show interest in developing the breed, registration still is a low priority for the hunting kennels.

In 2007, Vitor Veiga and I had a full afternoon of conversation in person under an old maple tree at the UKC Premier show in Kalamazoo MI. During this, he described a program that had been initiated in the mid-2000's in Portugal for registering different bloodlines of Podengo Medios.
For a litter to obtain full registration, it must be preceded by 3 generations of traceable lineage, each evaluated by 3 qualified judges. The precedent generations would have incomplete registration. Participation was to be limited to breeders only in Portugal.
It will be many years until legitimate 'fresh' blood would be available to other countries.
